The Witchell Ladies

Witchell Ladies at Field Farm

Witchell Ladies at Field Farm

Notes by Martin Davis

The 3 ladies standing outside Field Farm around 1880 are a bit of a puzzle. At the time Mary Witchell (nee Willcox) was living with her daughter Susan at Field Farm - so that must be two of them. The 1881 census gives Mary, aged 85, farmer, as the the head of the household. Mary was born in Butcombe around 1795. Her daughter, Susan, was 36 at the time. The third person could be a sister of Mary - there were four: Elizabeth, Hannah, Lucy and Sarah.  Looking in the 1881 census, Elizabeth may have been living in Cheltenham; I cannot find Hannah in 1881, but she was living at Bailey's Farm (with her brother Benjamin in 1871), aged 54, so could have been alive in 1880. I know nothing of sisters Lucy and Sarah.  (The BMD index gives the death of a Hannah Willcox, registered at Barton Regis, Gloucestershire in 1879.)

My guess, then, would be: Mary on the left, then Susan, and Hannah on the right.
